Are addictions to drugs by themselves a guarantee that you’ll overdose and probably die? Probably not. However, I estimate about 85 percent of the clients I work with have some form of addiction and often multiple ones.

My definition of an addiction: Any repeated behavior that doesn’t produce the results you want. This encompasses so many things beyond drugs and alcohol, including work, sex and food to alleviate stress.

Recently, I watched a video that argues the opposite of addiction isn’t more drugs. It’s the lack of connection. So why do people isolate themselves from others?

In this video, I discuss attachment theory (how children bond with their mother and father in the first two years of their lives). Roughly half of all people have secure attachments, while the rest struggle with attachment syndromes meant to compensate for this gap.

Also, it’s important to remember that addictions are attempts to get safe love. People with unsolved traumas who don’t have the skills or support to heal seek out safe love.
